Sierra Vista City Guide

Situated within the city is the famous Fort Huachuca, headquarters of the U.S. Army Communications Command, Army Intelligence Center, 11th Signal Brigade and other units. The all African-American 24th Infantry was the first entire regiment stationed at the Fort. Their fellow "Buffalo Soldiers," the 10th Cavalry, arrived in 1913, served in Pershing's punitive expedition against Pancho Villa in 1916, and helped guard the U.S.-Mexican border until 1931.

ATTRACTIONS

Fort Huachuca, established in 1877 as a cavalry post to safeguard settlers, now has an excellent historical museum (520-533-5736). Another outstanding facility of Native American culture in the area is Amerind Foundation Museum. Within a 1-hour drive of Sierra Vista, visitors can enjoy an archive of Native American and pioneer history and unique bird-watching opportunities.

The San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, just east of Sierra Vista, is a unique mixture of historic and outdoor recreational sites. Combined with the Nature Conservancy's Ramsey Canyon Preserve (nicknamed the "Hummingbird Capital of the U.S.), this is one of the country's premier bird-watching areas. Agua Prieta, Nogales and Naco, Mexican cities across the border, offer excellent curio shops, restaurants and night clubs.
